Described as 'a masterpiece' due to its insights into the ordinary (and extraordinary) lives of people during 1914-18 and beyond, Brian's research extending over ten years, is based on the case studies of over 700 individuals, alongside their family backgrounds and the communities in which they lived and worked. Forever a ‘Barnsley Lad’, Brian taught and lecturer locally before becoming a full-time writer and editor. He helped to establish Experience Barnsley Museum and a Miners’ Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum, Staffordshire alongside publishing local history books over the past five decades.
